A. Draw your image
- 1. Have an idea
- 2. Get pencil and paper
- 3. Draw
B. Scanning
- 1. Have a scanner (Know how to properly use it - I suggest glancing at the manual)
- 2. Place image with drawing onto Scanner
- 3. I Suggest that if it's a line drawing to scan at 600 - 1200 dpi. And if there are options to change the contrast so the lines are dark as can be without altering the image, do so. If not, then Photoshop has options too.
- 4. Save your image where you'll know where it is
C. Photoshop (make sure you save constantly throughout the process)
- 1. Open Photoshop
- 2. Go to File > Open (a pop up should appear after clicking it
- 3. Find your Saved scanned file.
- 4. Click Open
D. Darkening the lines (If the lines are too light)
- 1. Easiest Option : Go under Image > Adjustments > Brightness/ Contrast...
- 2. A pop up appears - change the values according to fit your needs.
- 3. Other Options: Try out Image > Adjustments > Curves or Levels...play with that
E. Changing the dpi from 1200 to 300dpi
- 1. Go to Image > Image Size (a pop up should appear)
- 2. Under Document Size in the pop up (make sure the box is unchecked for Resample)
- 3. Change the Resolution to 300 (notice the width and height numbers increase)
- 4. Click Ok
F. Change the document size
- 1. Go to Image > Image size (a pop up should appear)
- 2.Under Document Size in the pop up recheck the Resample
- 3. Under Document Size, change the width or height to your liking (make sure it's smaller then the current width height. You don't want to increase it or else you'll create pixels)
- 4. Click Ok
G. Make a new layer
- 1. Go to Layer > New > Layer or in the layers palette click the icon that looks like a rectangle with a folded edge
H. Duplicate your background layer or the layer your Image is on.
- 1. in the layer's palette, click on the layer and go to Layers > Duplicate Layer or press Ctrl
+ J simultaneously
- 2. Put that duplicated layer on top of the new layer you created earlier (so in your palettes it looks like a sandwich (duplicated image on top, new layer in the middle, original layer at the bottom) - If you didn't know how to put the duplicated layer on top, just click and hold on it, drag the layer up.
I. Coloring
- 1. set the duplicated layer's transfer mode to Multiply or Overlay (I forget which one)
- 2. Transfer mode is located in the Layer's palette, by default it should be set to "normal" so change it to Multiply or Overlay.
- 3. Lock that layer by clicking on the Lock icon in the Layer's Palette.
- 4. click on the middle layer.
- 5. Option 1: Color by brush - pick a brush (press B) - pick a color (the color icon in your Tools Palette, double click to change the color - drag back and forth on the image. Notice that you're coloring underneath your image.
- 5 Option 2: Color by Lasso - click the lasso icon (press L), and roughly trace around the shape you want to color and end up where you started to close the trace (notice once you close the selection - dotted lines show up called "marching ants", click on the Paintbucket icon (press G) in the Tool palette, pick a color, click within the marching ants.
- 5. Option 3: Use the pen tool (the two options mentioned should suffice)
- 5. Option 4: Use the channels
- 5. Option 5: many other options
- 6. You can also have multiple "middle" layers to paint/color on. One can be used for the base color, another layer could be used for shadows, and another could be used for highlights.
++Remember save often ++ (File > Save)
J. Printing
- 1. Have a printer ( know how your printer works - read the manual)
- 2. Go to File > Print
K. Taking it to a commercial printer - Save a copy
- 1. File > Save As (pop up)
- 2. Name the file
- 3. Format : Tiff (uncheck the layers box)
- 4. Click Save
- 5. Press Ok.
